FLOODING: Nigeria at risk of Chikungunya virus outbreak, NCDC warns

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public health advisory warning about the potential outbreak of the Chikungunya virus in the country. The agency highlighted the worsening environmental and climatic conditions, with confirmed cases reported in Nigeria in 2025.

The risk of transmission remains high due to widespread flooding during the ongoing rainy season. The NCDC emphasized the need for proactive risk reduction measures, as the environmental conditions are conducive to an outbreak, especially in states experiencing increased flooding.

The advisory also mentioned the heightened risk of other diseases like Dengue and Yellow Fever. The NCDC urged residents to take preventive measures seriously, such as using mosquito nets, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water to prevent mosquito breeding.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to strengthen surveillance and response efforts.
