FG Targets Local Fertilizer Production to Boost Food Security

The Federal Government of Nigeria is focusing on enhancing food security by reducing dependence on fertilizer imports through local production. A delegation led by Tega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communication, conducted inspections of major fertilizer blending plants in Lagos, Kaduna, and River State from June 18 to June 21, 2026.

The initiative is part of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative, which aims to ensure quality fertilizers are available and affordable for Nigerian farmers. Ogra noted that Nigeria has abundant raw materials necessary for fertilizer production, which can significantly improve crop yields and strengthen food security.

The delegation assessed the operational efficiency and quality control measures at the facilities, including OCP Africa's Kaduna blending plant, which has a capacity of 90 metric tons per hour. The initiative aims to create jobs, reduce production costs, and support the agricultural sector, aligning with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
