INEC Confirms Fabrication of Amupitan's Alleged X Account

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), through its Chief Press Secretary Adedayo Oketola, announced that a forensic investigation has determined that an alleged X account associated with its chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, was fabricated.

The investigation, conducted by independent cybersecurity experts, utilized multi-layer forensic digital analysis and found no connection between the disputed account and Amupitan. The controversy began on April 10, 2026, when a viral social media post claimed Amupitan made partisan remarks, accompanied by a screenshot of a supposed digital record.

The forensic probe revealed that attempts to verify the account's ownership failed, and no evidence existed to support the claims made in the viral post. The investigation also uncovered multiple fraudulent accounts impersonating Amupitan, indicating a coordinated disinformation campaign.

INEC urged the public to avoid sharing unverifiable information and emphasized the importance of accuracy in media reporting.
