Former Accountant-General Sentenced to 72 Years for Fraud

Former Accountant-General Nwaboku has been sentenced to 72 years in prison for his involvement in a N868 million fraud case. Justice Jame Omotosho delivered the judgment, stating that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) successfully proved nine counts of money laundering against Nwaboku beyond a reasonable doubt.

The court sentenced him to eight years for each count, although the sentences will run concurrently. Justice Omotosho described Nwaboku's actions as a diversion of funds meant for the security of the Defence Ministry.

Notably, Nwaboku voluntarily refunded part of the siphoned money, amounting to N200 million, during the investigation. He was arraigned on January 15, 2025, and admitted to bail of N500 million with two sureties.

The charges against him stem from alleged fraudulent activities conducted while he served as the Director of Finance and Accounts at the Ministry of Defence from 2019 to 2021.
