Tonte Ibraye Leaves ADC Amid Leadership Crisis Ahead of 2027

Tonte Ibraye, who ran for governor on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform in 2023, announced his resignation from the party on September 24, 2026. He cited the party's ongoing leadership crisis and unresolved legal disputes as reasons for his departure, stating that the situation had escalated from political friction to a matter of principle.

Ibraye's resignation letter was addressed to the ADC Ward Chairman of Degema Ward 16 in Bille, Rivers State. He expressed concerns over a leadership dispute linked to a faction associated with former Senate President David Mark, which he claimed was improperly influencing party structures and candidate selection processes amidst ongoing legal issues.

Ibraye criticized the legitimacy of candidates emerging from such a disputed leadership, describing them as being "on quicksand rather than solid ground." He also addressed the influx of new entrants attempting to displace established party executives, exacerbating the internal crisis. Ibraye emphasized the need for a credible opposition in Nigeria, advocating for clear economic and social policies rather than solely focusing on removing the incumbent president.

His resignation took immediate effect, and he plans to consult with supporters across Rivers State before determining his next political move.
