Former Super Eagles Coach Adegboye Onigbinde Dies at 88

Adegboye Onigbinde, the former coach of Nigeria's national football team, the Super Eagles, has died at the age of 88. His family confirmed his passing on March 9, 2026, just four days after he celebrated his 88th birthday on March 5.

Bolad Adesuyi announced the news via a WhatsApp message, stating that details regarding his burial arrangements would be provided later. Onigbinde was highly respected within Nigerian football circles, having managed the Super Eagles during two separate periods: first from 1982 to 1984, when the team was known as the Green Eagles, and again in 2002 after the departure of Shuaibu Amodu.

Under his guidance, Nigeria reached the finals of the 1984 African Cup of Nations, although they lost 3-1 to Cameroon. Earlier in his career, he led the Shooting Stars Sports Club in Ibadan to the finals of the African Cup Champions.

After leaving the national team, Onigbinde remained an influential figure in football, serving as a technical instructor for CAF and FIFA, helping to train and mentor coaches across the continent.
