Foundation Advocates for Inclusion of Down Syndrome Persons

During the 2026 World Down Syndrome Day celebrations, Rose Mordi, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria, urged the government to strengthen policies that promote the inclusion of persons with Down Syndrome. This call coincided with the foundation's 25th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in advocacy for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Mordi highlighted that despite some progress, total inclusion remains elusive, with many facing barriers to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. She stressed the importance of moving beyond policy formulation to actual implementation and enforcement of disability laws.

Sundai Uju, head of the foundation's education and social services unit, emphasized the need for equal opportunities for children and young adults with Down Syndrome. Oluwabunmi Shoshino, PTA chairperson, noted the foundation's positive impact on children and families, advocating for interaction and exposure to help develop potential.

The event served as a precursor to a series of activities celebrating the foundation's anniversary and promoting the rights of individuals with intellectual disabilities in Nigeria.
