Four miners die in Plateau State pit collapse incident

On Tuesday, around 10 a.m., a mining pit in Bokkos, Plateau State, collapsed, resulting in the deaths of four miners, comprising two men and two women. Christopher Luka, a youth leader in the area, confirmed the incident and noted that one victim was buried on Tuesday due to being Muslim, while the other three were buried the following day as they were Christians.

Maren Jacob, a local resident, also verified the occurrence, stating that the miners were engaged in sand excavation near a riverbank. The bodies were recovered on the same day as the collapse.

This tragic event is part of a concerning trend, as many miners have died in similar incidents, despite the Plateau State government's ban on illegal mining activities. Notably, on August 13, 2026, seven miners were killed in a separate collapse at Kassa community in Barkin Ladi LGA of Plateau State.
