France to Lead U.N. Vote on Iran Sanctions Panel

France is preparing for a U.N. Security Council vote this month regarding the extension of the mandate for a panel of experts overseeing sanctions on Iran, which is set to expire on September 26 during the U.N.

Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont stated that discussions will center on Iran's nuclear program and its compliance with U.N. obligations. The vote is expected to occur on September 17, but may face vetoes from Russia and China, who argue that the Security Council lacks authority over the Iranian nuclear issue.

The sanctions committee, known as the 1737 Committee, was established in 2006 to oversee U.N. sanctions imposed on Iran due to its nuclear activities. The current tensions arise following a decision by Britain, France, and Germany to activate a U.N. “snapback” mechanism last year, restoring sanctions lifted under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, citing Iran's non-compliance.

Iran has denied seeking nuclear weapons, although its uranium-enrichment activities have raised international concerns.
