Francis Duru Says Yoruba Filmmakers Outpaced Igbos Through Better Organization

Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has opened a discussion about ethnic representation and industry control in Nigeria's film sector, claiming that while Igbo entrepreneurs laid the commercial foundation for home video cinema in the country, Yoruba filmmakers have since consolidated market power through deliberate coordination. Speaking during a recent interview on the Gbam programme hosted on Yan Content Factory's YouTube channel, Duru acknowledged the historical contributions of both groups to Nigerian cinema but emphasized divergent outcomes in recent decades.

Duru noted that Yoruba cultural figures, including Herbert Ogunde, are recognized as performance arts pioneers dating back to the 1950s. However, he asserted that the modern Nollywood phenomenon as understood globally emerged from Igbo traders' introduction of home video technology to Nigerian markets.

Despite this foundational role, Duru argued that Igbo filmmakers have since lost industry momentum relative to their counterparts. The actor attributed this shift to organizational differences between the two groups.

According to Duru, Yoruba producers demonstrated stronger internal support systems and took deliberate steps to safeguard their cultural narratives. He expressed particular concern that Yoruba filmmakers have increasingly adapted Igbo stories for screen while, in his view, misrepresenting the source material.

Duru criticized Igbo producers for failing to implement similar protective measures around their own heritage stories. Duru pointed to visible disparities in contemporary distribution as evidence of this power realignment.

Yoruba-produced films now secure more prominent cinema release windows and feature more prominently on international streaming platforms including Netflix, he noted. The absence of Igbo heritage narratives on such platforms represents a missed opportunity, according to the veteran actor's assessment.
