Nigerian DisCos Deploy 700,000 Free Prepaid Meters Nationwide to Improve Service and Billing Accuracy

The Nigerian Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) have commenced the nationwide rollout of 600,000-700,000 free prepaid meters, responding to NERC's push for improved service and accurate billing. Despite criticism from NERC Chairman Musiliu Oseni for delays, the initiative aims to provide relief to customers trapped in estimated billing.

Sundai Oduntan of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors clarified that customers will not pay upfront for the meters, with costs covered by the DisCos over a 10-year period. The move seeks to bridge Nigeria's metering gap and enhance transparency in electricity billing.
