Borno State Launches ₦1 Billion Youth Empowerment Program

On December 19, 2025, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum launched a ₦1 billion youth empowerment program targeting the training of young people as GSM repair technicians in Maiduguri, a city known for its mobile phone repair market. This initiative aims to address the economic devastation caused by the Boko Haram insurgency that began in 2009, which displaced millions and disrupted education and employment opportunities.

The program selected 1,050 young technicians for specialized training in mobile phone repair and maintenance, with 3,500 apprentices receiving financial support and professional tools. The total investment for the program was ₦482 million.

Governor Zulum emphasized the importance of investing in human capital rather than providing mere financial handouts. Additionally, on March 4, 2026, the governor reported that 2,970 young people completed vocational training across nine institutes, with a total investment of ₦2.05 billion in business starter packs.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to restore dignity and economic independence among the youth in the region.
