Borno State Launches 1 Billion Naira Youth Program

On December 19, 2025, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum launched a 1 billion naira youth empowerment program in Maiduguri, targeting the training of young people as GSM repair technicians. This initiative aims to address the economic devastation caused by the Boko Haram insurgency that began in 2009, which disrupted education and employment opportunities for millions.

The program selected 1,050 young technicians for specialized training in mobile phone repair, with an additional 3,500 apprentices receiving financial support and professional tools. The initiative includes modern equipment like 852D hot air rework stations and soldering tools, with a total disbursement of 482 million naira.

Governor Zulum emphasized that this program is part of a broader strategy to invest in human capital rather than providing mere financial handouts. Furthermore, on March 4, 2026, the governor announced the completion of vocational training for 2,970 young people across nine vocational institutes, distributing business starter packs valued at 2.05 billion naira to help them establish enterprises.
