FRSC Reports Concern Over Rise in Road Crashes in Nigeria in 2025

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) raised alarm over the surge in road crashes in Nigeria in 2025, recording a total of 10,446 crashes nationwide. The Corps Marshal, Shehu Moham, disclosed these statistics in Abuja during the presentation of the FRSC's 2025 annual road traffic crash report.

While there was a marginal decrease in fatal crashes, serious crashes rose by 10.5%, and minor crashes increased by 17.5%. The number of people injured in road crashes also saw a 7.2% rise.

Despite a slight reduction in fatalities, the FRSC acknowledged that their post-crash response interventions fell short of their strategic targets. The report highlighted the need for a shift towards preventive measures and compliance enforcement to address Nigeria's road safety challenges.

Moham identified speeding as the leading cause of crashes, accounting for 41% of incidents in December 2025. To combat this trend, the FRSC announced new policies for 2026, including intelligence-led enforcement and a zero-tolerance approach to major traffic offenses, particularly focusing on commercial vehicles.
