FRSC Reports Alarming Rise in Road Traffic Incidents for 2025

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) released the 2025 road traffic report, indicating a total of 10,446 crashes and 5,289 deaths across Nigeria, marking a 9.2% increase in crashes from 2024. Serious crashes rose by 10.5%, while minor crashes increased by 17.5%.

Injuries from road accidents rose to 33,400, a 7.2% increase from the previous year. Despite a 2.4% reduction in fatalities, the report underscores a troubling upward trend in road traffic incidents.

FRSC Corp Marshal Shehu Mohammed noted that while post-crash responses improved, they fell short of the strategic target of a 10% reduction in fatalities. The report also highlighted that speeding remains the leading cause of crashes, accounting for 41% of incidents.

In response, the FRSC plans to implement new policies for 2026, including zero tolerance for major traffic offenses and stricter speed management, particularly for commercial vehicles. The report emphasizes the need for behavioral change among road users to enhance safety.
