Tanzania's President Cuts Convoy to Tackle Fuel Crisis

On March 3, 2023, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan ordered government officials to travel by bus during official trips to cut down on fuel consumption amid a fuel crisis. This decision comes in response to a fuel shortage exacerbated by the ongoing war in the Middle East, which has caused fuel prices to soar in the East African nation.

Typically, the presidential entourage consists of around 30 vehicles, including luxury SUVs and police escorts, which often create traffic disruptions. However, President Hassan's directive allows for only essential vehicles, such as police escorts, to accompany her during official trips.

This measure follows a recent rationing of fuel in Tanzania, which has been affected by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil supply. Additionally, the Ethiopian government has prioritized vehicle transport for essential goods in light of the fuel crisis.
