FCT Residents Decry Transport Fare Hikes Amid Fuel Surge

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are expressing their frustrations regarding the significant increase in transport fares following a rise in petrol prices across the country. The price of petrol has escalated from N835 to N1,350, leading to fare increases of up to 100%.

Commuters reported that fares have risen sharply, with Mr. Ngozi Okeke, a civil servant in Garki, noting that her daily fare to Nyanya has increased from N500 to N700.

Similarly, Mr. Musa Abdullahi mentioned that his fare to Masaka has risen from N700 to N1,200.

Taxi drivers, like Mr. John Ez, have also adjusted fares due to the rising cost of fuel, which is now N1,350 per liter.

Economists, including Dr. Ibrahim Sule, warn that these transport fare increases will likely trigger higher food prices, as traders often pass on additional costs to consumers.

Sule advises the government to implement social protection measures and improve mass transit systems to mitigate the impact on residents.
