Abuja Residents Face Rising Transport Fares Amid Fuel Hike

Residents of Abuja are experiencing significant challenges in commuting as fuel prices have risen, leading to increased transport fares. Commuters are spending more time bargaining for affordable rides, with reports indicating that fares on major routes have risen by 500 to 1,000 Naira.

For instance, the fare from Berger Roundabout to Zuba has increased from 1,500 to 1,800 Naira, while the fare from Nyanya to Jabi has risen to around 1,700 Naira. Commuters like Stanlei Uwalaka have reported spending between 3,500 to 4,000 Naira daily on transport.

Commercial drivers, such as Paul, attribute the fare increases to rising fuel prices and vehicle maintenance costs, stating that they adjust fares based on current fuel prices. Some drivers are reluctant to negotiate fares, while others are considering converting their vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG) due to the challenges posed by rising petrol prices.

The situation has led many traders and commuters to reconsider their daily travel plans.
