Nigerian Civil Servants Demand Fuel Price Stabilization

Civil servants, represented by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), have called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the escalating economic difficulties faced by workers and Nigerians. In a letter to the President, they demanded the stabilization of petrol prices at N500 per litre and an immediate Wage Award to alleviate the impact of rising living costs.

The JNPSNC highlighted that recent petrol price increases to N1,430 per litre have exacerbated the cost-of-living crisis. They have given the Federal Government until September 30, 2026, to respond to their demands, warning of growing tensions among workers due to economic hardships linked to the removal of fuel subsidies three years ago.

The council criticized current palliative measures, arguing they are insufficient and called for a review of public-sector salaries and the establishment of a committee to negotiate a new National Minimum Wage ahead of January 2027. They stressed that urgent action is necessary to prevent further deterioration of the economic situation.
