Atiku Challenges Tinubu on Fuel Subsidy Proceeds Accountability

Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate and former Vice President of Nigeria, has demanded that President Bola Tinubu provide an account of the proceeds from the removal of fuel subsidies. Atiku stated that ordinary Nigerians have borne the full cost of this policy through increased prices but have not witnessed the promised enhancements in public services.

He pointed out ongoing issues such as the threat of a new strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), unpaid salaries, and inadequate university infrastructure. Atiku emphasized that the government had assured Nigerians that the funds released from subsidy removal would be invested in healthcare and infrastructure.

However, he noted that lecturers continue to express concerns over unpaid salaries, and ASUU is warning of potential industrial action. He questioned the government's claims that subsidy savings have benefited state governments, citing a lack of improvement in public education quality.

Additionally, Atiku criticized the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), arguing that it fails to address the root causes of rising university fees.
