Atiku Abubakar Demands Accountability from Tinubu on Funds

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, has demanded accountability from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the management of public funds, specifically in light of the removal of petroleum subsidies. In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku noted that his reconciliation of Federation Account figures revealed approximately ₦28 trillion needing explanation up to June 2026, with July figures pushing this amount towards ₦30 trillion.

He emphasized that gross statutory revenue for July 2026 was ₦4.359 trillion, yet only ₦3.007 trillion was distributed among the Federal Government, 36 states, and 774 local councils. Atiku criticized the ongoing deductions from revenues before distribution and urged the Tinubu administration to publish detailed accounts of these funds, including deductions and beneficiaries.

He stressed that the government must clarify how the revenues from subsidy removal are being utilized, as Nigerians were promised that these reforms would lead to developmental resources.
