Kano State Government Reclaims Grazing Reserves for Peace

Fulani leaders, represented by Capt Abdullahi Bakoji, the Kano State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), have welcomed the Kano State government's recent decision to reclaim grazing reserves. This initiative is seen as a proactive measure to protect cattle routes and promote peaceful coexistence amid ongoing conflicts between herders and farmers.

Bakoji commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for issuing an executive order that prohibits the illegal sale and allocation of grazing reserves. The MACBAN expressed gratitude for this response to long-standing concerns regarding encroachments on grazing routes.

A multi-stakeholder committee will be established, including local government chairmen and representatives from pastoralist communities, to ensure transparency in identifying and verifying encroachments. Over the past two years, 371 grazing reserves have reportedly been affected.

Bakoji emphasized that the initiative aims to prevent conflict and strengthen social harmony across Kano State, addressing the tensions arising from the loss of grazing routes.
