List of Nigerian Governors Impeached Since 1999

Impeachment has been a significant method for removing elected governors in Nigeria, with the first instance occurring on June 23, 1981, when Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa was removed as governor of Kaduna State. His impeachment stemmed from political conflicts with a rival-dominated House of Assembly.

During Nigeria's Fourth Republic, which began in 1999, six governors were impeached, including Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha, who was removed on December 9, 2005, as governor of Bayelsa State due to corruption and financial misconduct allegations. His deputy, Goodluck Jonathan, succeeded him.

Alamieyeseigha's impeachment was upheld by the courts, unlike several others that were later overturned. Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, who became governor of Oyo State in May 2003, also faced impeachment, highlighting the contentious political landscape in Nigeria where impeachment proceedings have often been influenced by political rivalries.
