INEC Releases Revised Timetable for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections in Nigeria, following the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026. The presidential and national assembly elections are now scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and state house assembly elections will take place on February 6, 2027.

This adjustment was made in response to concerns from Muslim stakeholders regarding the original election dates coinciding with the Ramadan period. The Senate has amended the Electoral Act to reduce the mandatory notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days, allowing INEC to change the dates.

Preparatory activities for the elections are set to commence on April 1, 2026, with various key dates for governorship and state house assembly elections outlined, including significant dates in July, August, September, and January leading up to the elections.
