UK Home Office Lists Exemptions for Entry Permissions

The UK Home Office has published official guidance outlining categories of individuals who do not require permission to enter the UK, thereby exempting them from standard immigration controls, including the need for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or visa. The guidance identifies two main groups: those entirely exempt from immigration control and those exempt from needing permission to enter.

A specific category includes crew members arriving on ships, shuttle trains, or aircraft, provided they depart on the same transport within seven days. This includes captains of ships and aircraft.

However, this exemption does not apply to individuals subject to deportation orders, those previously refused entry, or offshore workers. Additionally, transport workers such as seafarers and airline crew are exempt from needing an ETA, even if their nationality typically requires one.

The Home Office emphasized that crew members traveling to the UK for activities under the standard visitor route still need an ETA.
