UK Exempts Certain Crew Workers from ETA Requirement

The United Kingdom government has published official guidance identifying four specific crew-based occupations whose holders are exempt from the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement. This exemption applies to citizens of 82 countries who usually need an ETA for short stays in the UK.

The exempt occupations include: 1) Seafarers, who must hold an International Labour Organisation (ILO) seafarer's book or be traveling for repatriation; 2) Ferry crew members, who must be active crew entering or leaving the UK; 3) Airline crew, who qualify when working, deadheading, or positioning for flights; and 4) International rail crew, who must work on through-trains or shuttle trains and adhere to specific conditions regarding control areas and departure schedules. The guidance clarifies that these exemptions are strictly tied to professional duties, and individuals intending to engage in activities outside their crew capacity will still require an ETA.
