Gas Supply Constraints Reduce Nigeria's Power Generation

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported that ongoing gas supply constraints have caused a temporary reduction in power generation across the nation. As of 5:00 AM on March 5, 2026, the total generation capacity of the national grid stood at 3,940.53 MW, which is already below the expected capacity due to existing gas supply limitations.

By 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM, several generating units were forced to shut down due to inadequate gas supply, resulting in a cumulative reduction of approximately 292 MW available for the grid during this period. Data from March 4, 2026, indicated that thermal power plants required approximately 1,588.61 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas per day to operate at optimal capacity; however, the actual gas supply to the stations was approximately 652.92 MMSCF, representing only 40% of the required gas for optimal generation.

NISO is actively working with relevant gas suppliers and generation companies (Gencos) to monitor the situation and facilitate the restoration of gas supply to stabilize power generation.
