Nigeria's Power Supply Drops to 4,300MW Due to Gas Shortage

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported that gas supply constraints have caused a nationwide power supply reduction to approximately 4,300MW. This shortfall is attributed to limitations in gas supply affecting thermal generation plants, which dominate Nigeria's generation mix.

As of February 23, 2026, the actual gas supply to these stations was about 692 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF), representing a significant shortfall of over 43% of the required daily gas supply of 1,629.75 MMSCF for optimal operation. The NISO indicated that when total system generation drops significantly, load shedding is implemented to maintain grid stability and prevent system disturbances.

The organization expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to electricity consumers and stated that they will continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure full energy allocation as gas supply improves and generation capacity is restored.
