Nigeria's Power Generation Drops to 3,940.53MW

As of March 4, 2026, Nigeria's power generation has fallen to 3,940.53MW, which is below the expected capacity due to existing gas supply limitations. The inadequate gas supply has forced several generating units to shut down, resulting in a cumulative reduction of approximately 292MW available for the national grid.

Thermal power plants require about 1,588.61 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of gas per day to operate at optimal capacity; however, the actual gas supply to the stations is approximately 652.92 mmscf, representing only 40% of the required amount. The Nigerian System Operator (NISO) is actively working with relevant generating companies (Gencos) and gas suppliers to monitor the situation closely and facilitate the restoration of generation capacity.
