Gattuso Resigns as Italy Coach After World Cup Failure

Gennaro Gattuso resigned as the head coach of the Italian national football team on Friday after the Azzurri failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time. Gattuso, who took charge in June 2022 following the dismissal of Luciano Spalletti, faced criticism after Italy's poor performance, including a penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the qualifying playoffs.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president, Gabriel Gravina, requested Gattuso's immediate resignation after the team's elimination in Zenica. Under Gattuso's leadership, Italy recorded six wins, one draw, and one loss in eight matches, scoring 22 goals and conceding 10.

However, the team's inability to defend their title in Euro 2024 and a humiliating 4-1 loss to Norway at San Siro ultimately led to Gattuso's departure. Gianluigi Buffon, the national team general manager, is expected to play a role in the transition following Gattuso's resignation.
