Global Fisheries Trade Reaches $184 Billion in 2024

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that global fisheries and aquaculture production trade has hit a record high of $184 billion, rivaling terrestrial meat trade. This data was presented during the ongoing 11th Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Kenya.

The FAO's latest report, "State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2026," indicates that trade in aquatic animal products continues to grow, with projections estimating a total production of 235 million tons by 2024, including over 100 million tons from aquaculture. Aquatic animal food contributes significantly to global protein availability, providing 15% of animal protein and at least 20% for 40% of the world’s population.

The report also highlights that the international trade in aquatic products is expected to reach $186 billion in 2024, with the majority being aquatic animal products. The top five exporting countries account for 35% of total exports, with China leading at 11%.

The European Union remains the largest single market for imports.
