Germany Sets Visa Guidelines for Foreign Engineers in 2025

Germany has outlined specific guidelines for foreign engineers aiming to work in the country, as detailed on the official Make it in Germany portal. As of 2025, there are 120,702 foreign engineers employed in Germany, with 71,146 from non-EU countries.

Despite this, around 76,000 engineering positions remain unfilled, indicating a strong demand for skilled professionals. The engineering sector encompasses various specializations, including automation, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and the automotive industry, particularly in electric vehicles and autonomous driving.

Visa requirements differ based on the engineer's country of origin; EU and EFTA citizens do not need a visa, while others must obtain a residence permit. Two visa options are available for research-oriented roles: a dedicated research visa and the EU Blue Card.

Additionally, Germany offers a job search opportunity card for recent graduates, allowing them to seek employment for up to one year. Proficiency in German is not mandatory but is beneficial for integration into the labor market.
