Germany Sets New Standards for Foreign Nurses

Germany has outlined the official steps for foreign-trained nurses wishing to work in the country long-term. Due to the regulated nature of nursing, foreign nationals must obtain formal authorization to practice from the competent authority in the German state where they intend to work.

This authorization is valid nationwide once granted. There are two routes for recognizing nursing qualifications: one involves an equivalence assessment of training records against the German standard qualification "Pflegefachfrau/-mann" or "Pflegefachperson," while the other allows applicants to bypass this assessment and enter an adaptation program directly.

Applicants must also demonstrate a minimum German language proficiency of level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and provide a certificate confirming their physical and mental fitness to work. Additionally, proof of good character is required, typically in the form of a police clearance certificate or an equivalent German certificate of conduct.
