Germany Eases Immigration for Skilled Workers Without Degrees

Germany has revised its immigration regulations to ease the process for foreign skilled workers, including those lacking German-recognized qualifications. The updated Skilled Immigration Act began implementation in phases from November 2023 and will remain effective until 2026.

The legislation targets individuals with vocational training and practical knowledge outside formal academic settings. Key revisions to Germany's Residence Act include changes to residence permits for workers with vocational qualifications and university degrees.

Previously, foreigners needed a job directly related to their qualifications, but the new rules allow employment outside their field, barring regulated professions. Applicants meeting the requirements are now guaranteed a residence permit, a shift from the previous discretionary approval system.

The Opportunity Card, a new visa category, enables non-EU nationals to enter Germany to seek work without a job offer, operating on a points-based system that considers qualifications, language skills, experience, and age. This initiative aims to attract global talent to meet the demand for skilled labor in various sectors.
