Germany Introduces Opportunity Card for Skilled Workers

The German government has announced the Opportunity Card, a new residence permit under Section 20a of the Residence Act, aimed at skilled workers from outside the European Union and the European Free Trade Association. This card will allow individuals to enter Germany and search for employment without needing a job offer beforehand, with implementation set for 2026.

The requirements, detailed on the Make it in Germany platform, include a baseline condition where applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds to support their stay, either through a blocked bank account with a minimum of €1,091 (approximately N1.6 million) net per month or a declaration of commitment from a sponsor. There are two routes for qualification: one for those with recognized foreign qualifications or training in Germany, and another for those without, who must score at least six points based on various criteria, including qualifications, language skills, and professional experience.
