Germany Mandates Transit Visas for Nine African Nations

The German government has announced that citizens from nine African countries are required to obtain an airport transit visa, known as a Category A visa, for any stopover at German airports. This information is available on the official German foreign ministry website.

The countries affected include the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. Unlike most foreign travelers who can transit through German airports without a visa, these African nationals do not enjoy this privilege.

The transit visa exemption applies only at airports with a designated International Transit Area, which includes Frankfurt/Main, Munich, Hamburg (limited hours), Düsseldorf (with specific conditions), and Berlin-Brandenburg. Travelers from the listed countries should verify their visa requirements before booking flights through Germany, especially if their stopover involves entering the Schengen area.
