Germany Lists Visa Exemptions for Airport Transit Travelers

The German government has published official guidance in 2026 outlining the categories of travelers exempt from requiring an airport transit visa when transiting through German airports. The guidance specifies that individuals do not need a visa if they hold valid visas or national residence permits issued by EU and Schengen states, as well as certain national residence permits from Andorra, Japan, Canada, San Marino, and the United States.

Additionally, holders of valid visas from EEA countries, which include EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, are also exempt. Family members of EU citizens, including spouses, registered partners, children, and grandchildren under 21, are eligible for exemption if financially maintained by the EU citizen.

The exemptions are based on the type of documentation held rather than nationality. Travelers not meeting these criteria must obtain an airport transit visa before travel to avoid being denied boarding.
