Germany Closes Russian Consulate After Drone Attack

The German government has ordered the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn effective September 18, following a drone attack at Leipzig Airport, which Germany described as a Russian "hybrid attack." Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced these measures during a joint press conference with Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. Wadephul accused Russia of engaging in activities aimed at destabilizing Germany and other European nations, stating that Russia's leadership is treating Germany with "blatant hostility." He emphasized that Germany does not wish for relations with Russia to deteriorate further but noted that Russia shows no willingness to compromise.

The measures include terminating the lease for the Russian House in Berlin, pushing for new EU sanctions against individuals linked to hybrid attacks, and increasing pressure on Russia's "shadow fleet." Germany will also maintain its support for Ukraine and strengthen its defense capabilities while summoning the Russian Ambassador over the incident.
