Ghana Summons South Africa Envoy Over Xenophobic Incidents

Ghana's Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that the country has summoned the South African envoy, Thando Dalamba, due to recent xenophobic incidents targeting Ghanaian migrants in South Africa. These incidents have included harassment of Ghanaian nationals, prompting calls for their return home.

The situation has escalated as South Africa faces a high unemployment rate of 30 percent, leading to anti-migrant protests and violence. In a statement released late Thursday, Ablakwa warned of rising tensions and advised Ghanaian citizens to stay indoors for their safety.

He emphasized Ghana's historical support for the anti-apartheid struggle and condemned the unprovoked harassment of law-abiding individuals, which contradicts the principles of African solidarity. According to official statistics from 2022, approximately 2.4 million foreign-born individuals reside in South Africa, making up four percent of the country's population.
