Ghana to Evacuate 300 Citizens Amid Xenophobic Attacks

The Ghanaian government, led by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced plans to evacuate 300 citizens from South Africa in response to a recent surge of xenophobic attacks against migrants from Sub-Saharan African countries. The decision follows the circulation of violent protest videos on social media, prompting the government to take action to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad.

The Ghana High Commission is assisting in the registration of citizens wishing to return home. The South African government has condemned the violence and promised to address the issue of illegal immigration, which has been a catalyst for the unrest.

Additionally, South African authorities have warned citizens from other African nations, including Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe, to exercise caution and remain indoors amid the ongoing attacks. Reports indicate that at least 130 Nigerian citizens have requested to be flown home due to the escalating violence.
