HPV Vaccine Uptake Surges 70% in Oyo State Initiative

Girl Effect reported a 70% increase in HPV vaccine uptake in two local government areas of Oyo State, rising from a baseline of 55%. The initiative, led by Idris Suleiman, aims to improve health outcomes for girls aged 9 to 14 through community-driven strategies and stakeholder engagement.

The project emphasizes the need for tailored approaches to reach this primary target group, as HPV vaccination differs from routine immunization for younger children. Suleiman stressed the importance of informing parents and communities about the vaccine's role in preventing cervical cancer.

The program has successfully engaged teachers and healthcare workers to promote awareness and acceptance of the HPV vaccine. Dr.

Philip Zorto, Oyo State Coordinator, pledged continued support for health interventions, highlighting the need for strong coordination among stakeholders. The Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, represented by Dr.

Muideen Olatunji, called for sustained collaboration among government agencies and civil society to consolidate public health gains, particularly in adolescent health and HPV immunization.
