Call to Amend Unfair Sections of CAMA 2020 Act

Global Rights, alongside various civil society organizations, is advocating for amendments to what they consider unfair provisions in the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020. They have specifically targeted sections 824 and 850, which empower the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to classify associations and dissolve organizations without judicial oversight.

This call to action was made during a media roundtable in Abuja, where the group emphasized that these provisions undermine constitutional rights to fair hearing and threaten civic space. Legal counsel for the plaintiffs, Prof.

Sam Erugo, stated that the provisions violate safeguards and allow the CAC to impose penalties without due process. The Federal High Court dismissed a related case in October 2025 due to lack of standing, prompting the legal team to appeal.

The organizations argue that the current practices of the CAC could lead to misuse of power, undermining fundamental justice principles.
