Amupitan Accepts INEC Role After Divine Conviction

Prof. Joash Amupitan, appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by President Bola Tinubu in October 2025, revealed that he accepted the position after receiving a clear divine conviction from God.

During a thanksgiving service organized by the Nigerian Baptist Convention in Abuja, Amupitan emphasized the necessity of spiritual assurance before taking on such responsibilities, stating that he would not have accepted the role without it. He expressed confidence that God would guide and strengthen him in his leadership, despite the complexities and pressures involved in overseeing elections in Nigeria.

Amupitan also urged Nigerians to pray for the success of the 2027 general elections, expressing optimism that the polls would surpass previous exercises. His appointment follows the tenure of Mahmood Yakubu, which ended on October 7, 2025.

However, Amupitan's leadership is under scrutiny due to past social media activities that have raised concerns among opposition figures and civil society groups regarding the neutrality of the electoral body ahead of the upcoming elections.
