Gombe State Approves ₦70,000 Minimum Wage for Workers

Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has approved a ₦70,000 minimum wage for local government workers, which will be implemented across all 11 local government councils, including local education authorities and primary healthcare services. This decision was communicated by Muazu Shehu, the head of the state civil service.

The implementation is set to begin in May 2026 and follows a complete payment process that addresses a remaining 43 percent of the wage structure. The governor's approval is attributed to an improved financial standing at the local government level, which enhances their ability to pay salaries regularly without delays.

The move is expected to boost worker commitment, increase output, and strengthen services at the grassroots level. Civil society groups have been advocating for the full implementation of the minimum wage for local government workers, especially in light of rising living costs in the country.
