Federal and state governments commission solar project in Talasse serving 6,000+ households, with three more mini-grids under construction.

The Federal Government and Gombe State Government have activated a 1-megawatt solar mini-grid in Talasse, Balanga Local Government Area, marking the first time electricity reaches the community in over a decade and a half. The facility, officially opened on October 17, 2026, represents completion of work that began in November 2025, delivering power infrastructure to more than 6,000 households and businesses within roughly eleven months.

The Talasse installation includes battery storage capacity of 2.4 megawatt-hours and distributes power through an 11-kilovolt network equipped with smart prepaid meters. Governor Yahaya stated during the commissioning that the absence of grid electricity had restricted economic activity among farmers, artisans, traders and small business operators in the area for the past seventeen years.

The project is expected to unlock commerce and employment across the community. Beyond Talasse, construction has begun on four additional interconnected mini-grid systems with a combined capacity of 16 megawatts serving the communities of Dukku, Bajoga, Kumo and Kaltungo.

These projects form part of the federal push to expand distributed renewable energy infrastructure in underserved regions outside the traditional national grid footprint. The Talasse project incorporates productive-use equipment designed to support income-generating activities once residents gain access to power.

State officials framed the commissioning as proof that the government's renewable energy strategy is transitioning from announcement to practical delivery in communities that have lacked basic electricity access for years.
