FG Unveils Solar Mini-Grid in Kwara to Boost Power Access

The Federal Government has commissioned a solar-powered mini-grid in Oke-Oyi, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State, to enhance electricity supply to underserved communities. This 581kWp solar facility is equipped with a 1.4MW battery storage system (BESS) and is projected to provide electricity to approximately 1,800 households and businesses.

The battery system enables storage of excess solar power generated during the day, allowing for extended electricity supply, including after sunset. Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, emphasized the government's commitment to expanding access to reliable electricity and increasing renewable energy usage.

The project, delivered through the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS), received support from the Nigerian Energy Support Programme, the European Union, the Federal Republic of Germany through GIZ, and UNICEF. Tegbe noted the importance of private-sector investment in addressing Nigeria's electricity challenges.

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency stated that the project exemplifies how interconnected mini-grids can enhance power supply and stimulate economic activities.
