Kaduna State Proposes Bill to Regulate House Rents

The Kaduna State government is moving forward with legislation aimed at regulating residential rents across the state, in response to the rising cost of housing that is impacting household incomes. The bill, sponsored by Speaker Yusuf Dahiru Liman, seeks to establish a structured framework for determining rental prices.

Currently under review by a relevant committee of the Kaduna State Assembly, the proposed law aims to enhance predictability in landlord-tenant relationships and provide a mechanism for addressing excessive rent charges. To ensure the regulation is practical and enforceable, the Assembly is conducting public hearings to gather input from tenants, landlords, property owners, estate professionals, developers, and civil society organizations.

The initiative is part of Governor Sani's broader efforts to alleviate economic hardship for residents. Stakeholder consultations will continue throughout the legislative process before the bill is finalized.

If enacted, this law would significantly change how residential rents are managed in Kaduna State.
