Governors’ Forum Supports National Policing Bill Reform

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed its support for the proposed National Policing Bill, identifying the establishment of state police as a significant reform under President Bola Tinubu's administration. During a briefing at the State House, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun represented the Forum and stated that the legislation aims to create a legal and operational framework for effective state policing, countering fears of federal overreach.

Abiodun emphasized that the Working Group is dedicated to ensuring that the constitutional amendment is translated into a law that clearly delineates the responsibilities of federal and state police services. He noted that the National Policing Bill would tackle essential implementation issues, including necessary amendments to existing laws, funding arrangements, and operational matters crucial for state policing's success.

Additionally, Abiodun acknowledged the financial disparities among states and mentioned that the Working Group is considering recommending federal grants to assist states in establishing their police services.
