APC Governors and Lawmakers Clash Over 2027 Tickets

A significant clash has emerged between governors and lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding the proposal for automatic tickets for the 2027 general elections. Reports indicate that members of the Senate and House of Representatives are advocating for guaranteed return tickets to secure their positions.

Outgoing governors are also seeking senatorial tickets, leading to tensions within the party. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abba, argued that granting return tickets would help sustain legislative reforms championed by President Bola Tinubu's administration.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed support for the proposal, emphasizing its potential to stabilize governance during significant economic reforms. Recent closed-door meetings involving around 230 lawmakers did not yield a final decision, although party leadership assured that lawmakers' concerns would be considered.

Meanwhile, there are worries that some state governors may attempt to block the return of certain lawmakers, aiming to contest the seats themselves, which has heightened tensions ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
