Gowon Praises Buhari's Equal Governance in Remembrance

Yakubu Gowon, the former Nigerian military head of state, praised Muhammadu Buhari for his equitable governance during his presidency from 2015 to 2023. Speaking at the first-year remembrance of Buhari's service, Gowon highlighted that Buhari's leadership was characterized by fairness and a commitment to the welfare of all Nigerians, irrespective of their regional affiliations.

He dismissed perceptions that Buhari governed solely in the interest of northern Nigeria, asserting that Buhari treated all states equally. Gowon also reflected on the peaceful transition of power from Goodluck Jonathan, noting the importance of Jonathan's acceptance of the election results in preserving peace during a time of potential post-electoral violence.

Buhari, born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, previously served as Nigeria's military head of state from December 1983 to August 1985 and made three unsuccessful attempts to secure a second term in 2019 before passing away on July 13, 2025, in London.
